President’s
Project of the Year Award 2003Honorable Mention Wyoming Engineering Society (WES) Woods Landing Bridge Replacement Woods Landing, Wyoming Woods Landing residents and highway travelers now find a safer intersection at State Highway 10 and US Highway 230, along with a new bridge over the Laramie River. The new steel girder 180-foot bridge was constructed to replace the aged timber bridge, which was structurally deficient and caused log jams during spring runoff. The new bridge was designed to blend with the landscape and carry traffic safely through the Highway 10/Highway 230 intersection. Additionally, the bridge and roadway approach allow for adequate parking space and access to historic Woods Landing Dance Hall, a building entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. Despite the timber bridge demolition, new bridge construction and roadway work, local businesses remained accessible and traffic moved through the area throughout the project. Public involvement was a critical element in establishing the landscape and design criteria, and resulted in the use of landscaping boulders, new trees, picnic tables and preservation of existing trees where possible. Where the former bridge met the banks of the river, the land was graded to provide river access to recreational users. The roadway approach was modified to reduce the number of traffic accidents at the highway intersection by adding a stop for motorists traveling north on Highway 10 before turning onto Highway 230. The bridge over Laramie River is crossed by approximately 260 vehicles per
day. The new bridge and roadway realignment project was completed on schedule
and under budget. |
