Eagan North Water Treatment Plant Expansion
Owner: City of Eagan, MN

In expanding one of its water treatment plants, the City of Eagan successfully tackled energy conservation, safety, environmental, overcrowding, technology and aesthetic issues. Project highlights include:

  • The first-ever application in Minnesota of using the water the plant is treating to heat and cool the building. This highly energy-efficient technique, never before incorporated into a Minnesota water treatment plant, will greatly reduce energy costs and the need for dehumidification during summer months.
  • Lamella Plate Settlers that allowed 90 percent of the backwash waste to be reclaimed and treated. This space-saving technology also resolved site constraints larger backwash tanks would have presented.
  • The first “portable” emergency chlorine gas cylinder housing unit designed and constructed in the United States. This portable unit allows leaking cylinders to be immediately contained and safely removed from the site.
  • Successfully incorporating a maintenance facility into the water treatment plant, which relieved overcrowding at a nearby City facility.

High-end SCADA systems, impeccable attention to security and safety elements, quality interior design details, and an HVAC system that provides individual control in every space within the building and virtually eliminates chemical smells and humidity – staples in nearly every water treatment plant – make this multi-use facility a sound investment in the community’s infrastructure.
