The FAA 2007 Governor’s Award for the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport was presented to the City of Brainerd and Crow Wing County to recognize excellence in airport planning, development, operation, and maintenance, and to celebrate the spirit of aviation demonstrated within the community. The award winning Runway 16/34 project is a prime example of that excellence. Planning for the project began in 1990 and resulted in a 6,500-foot runway that can be expanded to 7,100 feet. Constructed within tight physical constraints, the project succeeded in establishing a very small environmental footprint that impacted only four acres of wetland on a 400-acre site. Almost 2 million yards of granular material was used and balanced on site. Runway 16/34 was constructed over three years. The project includes a full parallel taxiway, MALSR, and ILS on Runway 34. Funding was accomplished through local bonding and coordination with both the FAA and Mn/DOT to utilize grant resources that would maximize the navigational aids available to pilots. |
