Briefing Number 3, February 2005

Funds Available Through Wisconsin DNR to Stop Polluted Runoff
Application deadline: April 15, 2005

Stop polluted runoff

Your community or special purpose district may be eligible to receive funds through two Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) grant programs —the Targeted Runoff Management and the Urban Nonpoint Source & Stormwater Management—to address polluted runoff from urban and agricultural sites.

From now through April 15, 2005, you have the opportunity to apply for these grants. Projects may begin after January 6, 2006, with completion required within two years. Project costs are paid upfront by the community, with DNR reimbursing eligible costs through the grant program.

Not all costs are eligible for reimbursement. SEH experts can help you navigate the grant programs to help you determine which projects qualify for funding. We can also help you write and submit the grant application. DNR encourages communities to attend free workshops to explain the programs in depth and to address specific needs.

If you are in a priority watershed (or near a priority water body), or have a comprehensive implementation or enforcement program in effect, you have an increased chance to receive grant funds. Other deciding criteria include fiscal accountability, cost-effectiveness, water quality, extent of pollutant control and local community support.

We know fiscal resources are scarce, and SEH has the ability and experience to help you get started.

SEH has offices in several Wisconsin locations—Appleton, Chippewa Falls, Milwaukee, Madison, New Richmond, Rice Lake, Sheboygan and Wausau—and experts in these offices to help you.
