Terry Wotzka, PE, wears many hats when it comes to serving his clients, and according to them, it is this quality that distinguishes him from other consultants. “I have had the pleasure of working with Terry and have developed a level of professional respect and trust that makes him much more than a consultant to our community,” Sauk Rapids City Administrator Ross Olson said. “Terry has become a trusted advisor, co-worker and friend, as well as a passionate advocate for our community.”
"There’s no secret to what I do—it’s a matter of finding a balance between design and community. I put myself in my clients’ shoes and try to understand how I would feel if a project were affecting me,” Wotzka said. “That’s why I attend the weekly meetings, spend time with the residents and listen to the City’s needs and expectations. I want my clients to trust that I will do what’s best for them and their community, and I won’t do anything to compromise that trust.”
This approach to client service won Terry the City Engineers Association of Minnesota City Engineer of the Year Award—an honor rarely held by a consultant.
“I’m honored that the City of Sauk Rapids nominated me for this award,” Wotzka said. “But I have to admit, the greatest honor is knowing that the City is pleased with my service—the award is the icing on the cake.”
When asked what has captivated him most about municipal engineering for the past 25 years, Wotzka responded, “The close relationships I have with my clients—it’s like working with friends. I enjoy being able to help them out in ways where it’s a win for everyone.”
