Industrial Area Redevelopment/
Huset Parkway Reconstruction Project,
Columbia Heights, Minn.
CEAM Project of the Year!

Working toward the redevelopment of an aging foundry and industrial area, the City commissioned SEH to improve the street and utilities adjacent to its municipal park and City Hall. The project team addressed aging utilities, stormwater deficiencies, park improvements, and traffic impacts/access as land use in the area changed. SEH also introduced parkway and streetscaping elements to the redeveloped area. Upon completion of the project, the area brought in $125 million in new property value, increasing the value of the area by 13 percent. SEH Landscape Architects continue to work with the City to develop public art for the center of a new roundabout.

“The project is beautiful, and our community is very proud of the outcome,” City of Columbia Heights Project Director Randy Schumacher said.

Sue Mason Leads SEH to Third CEAM Award Win

Sue Mason PEMany people think that SEH Project Manager Sue Mason, PE, has the “Midas Touch.” And, even though everything she touches doesn’t turn into gold, it does, oftentimes, turn into a City Engineers Association of Minnesota (CEAM) Project of the Year Award.

Under Mason’s project leadership, SEH received its third CEAM Project of the Year Award within a six-year span. CEAM honored SEH with its first two awards for the work completed in Golden Valley, Minn.—in 2000 for the Xenia Avenue Extension Project and in 2004 for the Brookview Area Improvement Project. Sue received the most recent award for SEH’s design engineering services on the Industrial Area Redevelopment/Huset Parkway Reconstruction Project in Columbia Heights, Minn.

“My clients’ needs
guide me in
determining the
best team and the
best ideas
for a project.”

“I’m honored to have my name associated with these award-winning projects, but the credit ultimately goes to the clients,” Mason, a 21-year-SEH veteran, said. “After all, each project begins and ends with the vision of the city staff and the community. Their desire to develop the local economy and improve their infrastructure drives these projects. My team and I are simply a vehicle that provides the technical expertise and the horsepower.”

For the award-winning Columbia Heights project, Mason’s horsepower was comprised of SEH geotechnical, traffic, municipal, and water resources engineers, landscape architects, lighting designers, environmental scientists, and water supply specialists, in addition to public partners and other key agencies.

Huset Parkway, City Of Columbia Heights, MN“My biggest responsibility is to serve my clients well by being responsive, trustworthy, and passionate about their project,” Mason said. “Otherwise, my influence in a project is limited to SEH staff and other team member’s product delivery, responsiveness, and quality. My clients’ needs guide me in determining the best team and the best ideas for a project.”

Mason eloquently summed up her approach to project management in four words, “have fun, get’er done.”
