Project Spotlight

Denver Zoo Project
Exhibits Environmental Commitment

Denver Zoo ProjectSEH can add elephants, rhinos, and tapirs to their list of clients now that SEH has signed on with the Denver Zoo to assist them in developing their new Asian Tropics Exhibit. This exhibit will serve as an important cultural resource for visitors, showcasing some of Asia’s most unique animals and their cultural history. The new exhibit also serves as a model for sustainability and environmental responsibility, following the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification process throughout the entire project.

The new 10-acre complex focuses on the wise use of resources and renewable energy. It will feature a biomass gasification system designed to convert the Zoo’s solid waste materials into on-site energy generation and distribution. This high-profile project serves as an example in lowering the dependency on traditional energy sources and decreasing the challenges in managing solid waste streams.

SEH’s involvement includes a detailed evaluation and investigation of existing and proposed utilities that serve the planned expansion. SEH will develop design solutions for all underground utilities, including water, sewer, and specialized utilities such as recycled water, life support systems, and mechanical and electrical systems. SEH will provide vertical elevations of the utilities, which will help create a 3D model for the underground utilities.

During the construction document phase, SEH will design a stormwater retention/detention system, sanitary sewer lift stations, as well as gravity and pressure lines for water, recycled water, sanitary, and process waste from the exhibit areas. Completion of this entire project is expected in Summer 2009.
