New Trinity School Integrates Classical Design with Contemporary Function

According to SEH client Trinity School, their new educational facility has received nothing short of “praise” since opening its doors this past winter to nearly 400 students and staff.

Trinity School looked to expand its building size to accommodate needed amenities absent in the previous school to enhance student learning for its 7th through 12th grade students. SEH answered the call, serving both as the architect and interior designer on the project. SEH Architects designed the two-story, 93,000-sq.-ft. building on a 12-acre site in Eagan, Minn., less than 10 miles from it previous 60,000-sq.-ft. facility in Bloomington, Minn.

The design approach applied by SEH to create large multi-purpose classrooms, technologically advanced science labs, a modern auditorium, sufficient administration space, and two gymnasiums (two more than the previous school) resulted in the school meeting its functional needs and the amenities they desired. SEH also applied Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles to the facility, including natural light and natural stone and tile.

To complement some of Trinity’s discussion-oriented learning, SEH designed some classrooms with a more conference-room environment. SEH limited the use of concrete blocks, which are common to public schools for noise control. Instead, SEH applied its acoustical engineering expertise and installed sound insulation between the walls of the classroom to eliminate sound traveling easily between rooms.

SEH Architects included the use of columns at entrances, an inner courtyard, and a slanted red shingled roof over parts of the building to add a hint of southern Mediterranean design in honor of Trinity’s classical curriculum.
