The Minnesota Chapter of the American Planning Association (MnAPA) awarded SEH with a Merit Award for the firm’s “Tower Harbor Master Plan and Design Standards” project.


April 19, 2010

The Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (MASLA) awarded a 2010 Merit Award for Planning and Research to SEH for the Harbor Redevelopment Master Plan in Tower, Minnesota.

The Associated Builders and Contractors of Wisconsin named the Coon Lake Boardwalk that SEH designed for the Village of Frederic, Wisconsin a 2008 Project of Distinction. Janke General Contractors, Inc. submitted the project for consideration.

SEH’s conceptual design for reusing the historic Lake Superior SOO Line ore dock in Ashland, Wisconsin was presented a Merit Award for Unbuilt Works by the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (MASLA).

The Loring Neighborhood in South Minneapolis exudes diversity and activity. Stately 100-year-old homes, brownstone apartments and retail buildings stand just minutes from the City’s lakes, the downtown area and the Walker arts community. The 275-foot-long Loring Bikeway Bridge, designed specifically for commuters heading into Downtown Minneapolis through this neighborhood, completes the Loring Bikeway Commuter Corridor and brings commuters safely across busy Lyndale Avenue just south of the Lowry Tunnel, where they connect with other routes heading into Downtown.

The University and 29th Avenues Development Objectives and Design Guidelines developed by SEH were intended to facilitate transit-supportive redevelopment and the evolution of a special place of high quality and enduring character.

This Enhancement Plan sets a model for how the US Forest Service can update existing byway and park facilities to meet contemporary standards for accessibility, sustainability and contextual design. Combining knowledge of circulation, materials, history and design, this project demonstrates how landscape architects can lead government agencies in resource management and aesthetics.

A major challenge facing the designers of I-35W Reconstruction Project was how to address issues of visual quality during the design of a major transportation project. Mn/DOT turned to SEH to help them facilitate a contentious public process that would determine the aesthetics of one of the busiest highway corridor in the Twin Cities. SEH developed solutions that will enhance the visual quality of the existing corridor for both neighbors and travelers.

In the mid-1960s, when freeway planners cleared a block-wide swath almost 70 blocks through south Minneapolis, they had little idea of I-35W’s lasting social and environmental effect. The highways’ massive sunken corridor became both a physical and social barrier that closed off residential streets and accelerated the concentration of poverty, especially to the east.
