SEH climbed 13 spots from last year, securing the 126th spot in the annual Top 500 Design Firm ranking from Engineering News Record (ENR).
The ranking was announced in the May 2017 issue of ENR, a design and construction publication. For the first time, SEH also made the list of Top 100 Pure Designers, a category for engineering companies not engaged in construction.
In addition to publishing the rankings, ENR also covered important industry topics in the May issue, including the rise of megamergers and the growing impact of technology on design. Former SEH CEO/President Sam Claassen shared his insight with the magazine.

The trend of megamergers is having an unexpected impact on markets and businesses.
With the rise and fall of megafirms, [clients] can be left with minimal choices in engineering firms and may have to work with a larger, multinational company with offices 500 miles away or a local company. This local advantage allows smaller firms to compete.
When asked about to the role of technology as it pertains to the design process, Claassen said, “Technological advancements have altered how we live, work and play—and how engineering consultants deliver solutions. At the same time, we need to be cautious of technology that may be unnecessary, expensive or not reliable.”
ENR ranks the U.S. top firms based on revenue from the prior year and includes firms in architecture, engineering, planning, landscape architecture and other design professions.
