Keeping Iowa Moving: Transportation Engineer Mike Lyons Joins SEH

August 25, 2016

From our newest office in Des Moines, Iowa, we welcome Senior Transportation Engineer Mike Lyons, PE, to the Highway Design team.

“Mike will lead the highway design team in Des Moines that can serve Iowa DOT, county and city clients,” said Mark Dierling, PE, Transportation Leader in Midwest. “He will also assist our team in Mason City with their transportation needs.”

Mike is revved-up to help the Iowa DOT, counties and local city governments solve mobility and improve safety on roads and highways throughout the state.

17 years in construction

Mike brings 17 years of transportation engineering. But his passion began when he was just a kid.

“As a kid, I was fascinated with highway construction and when my family traveled, I was always checking out construction,” said Mike. “My interest in civil engineering came during my high school years. I was fortunate to have a childhood friend whose father owned a firm, so I spent time surveying.”

Mike was born in the MidWest. He moved to warm, sunny Florida at a young age where he received his engineering degree and began working with the Florida Department of Transportation and on county projects.

After 25 years, he moved to Iowa, where he quickly learned about winter’s effect on engineering design. “One of the first design projects I worked on when I returned to Iowa involved a low-speed urban roadway design,” said Mike. “I suggested a moving sidewalk right behind the curb to help with the footprint/right-of-way, but the project manager needed that space for snow removal.”

“To this day, weather is always top-of-mind and I’m always keeping maintenance in mind when designing,” Mike adds.

Calling Iowa ‘home’

Mike met his wife Susan (from Iowa) in Florida but decided to move back to the MidWest to offer their family a better living environment. He and his wife Susan have been married for 13 years and have four children – daughters Payton (age 11) and Karsyn (age 9), and sons Kyler (age 5) and Keegan (age 4).

“My kids are my biggest hobby as they are involved in a lot of sports, and I enjoy spending time with my family,” says Mike. “I also love watching sports, playing golf, walking and fishing.”
