Managing Stormwater for Asian Tropics

The Asian Tropics/Toyota Elephant Passage exhibit houses Asian elephants, one-horned rhinos and Malayan tapirs.

It was designed with sustainability in mind; the Zoo achieved Leader in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification for the exhibit.

SEH provided engineering design support to the lead landscape architecture firm and helped design the water resources features for the new Asian Tropics/Toyota Elephant Passage exhibit for the Denver Zoo. SEH provided quality assurance for this innovative LEED Platinum project and helped address numerous underground utility design issues.

SEH utility designs included potable water, recycled water, hot water, a circulating water supply for the animal pools, stormwater, sanitary, electrical and gas.

In designing the Zoo’s new attraction, SEH staff used 3D modeling techniques to include water quality and stormwater detention into the exhibits. These designs also helped manage stormwater in the surrounding system.

In addition, the SEH team provided an innovative design for a stormwater retention lake next to the Zoo grounds. The design uses stormwater from one of the City’s over capacity stormwater mains to supply the lake with water.

The stormwater is filtered using porous landscape detention before it enters the lake. This process helps to keep the lake clean and clear.
