Sweeney Lake Total Maximum Daily Load Study

PROJECT UPDATE

MAY 15, 2007

As of Monday, May 12, we are fully setup and operating with the second season of monitoring on Sweeney Lake. I've highlighted the main milestones at this early stage of Phase 2 below and will plan to send an update at least monthly, or as needed as we review data and begin evaluate the BATHTUB modeling scenarios. Let me know if there's anything specific you would like to see in these updates. Also, send me anything you have that could/should be posted on the project webpages.

We appreciate Dave Hanson's efforts again getting the aerators turned off and allowing the water level monitoring on his dock. Chris at Barr and Brian at Three Rivers have a done a great job of getting things set up for year 2, and we're also off to a better start than last year relative to the weather cooperating. We've already had a couple of inflow events that were captured at the Shaper Pond inlet - special thanks to the Three Rivers crew for getting this station setup and operating so quickly.

Work Completed (and other Key Dates) Since Start of Phase 2

  1. Phase 2 Contract was executed by MPCA on March 26, 2008
  2. Ice out on April 15, 2008 (typically this occurs about March 27)
  3. Dave Hanson shut the last aerator down the morning of Thursday, April 17
  4. BCWMC Board Meeting - Phase 2 workplan update took place on April 17
  5. Inflow monitor/sampler at Shaper Pond was setup and operating on Friday, April 18
  6. First biweekly in-lake sampling event was April 30
  7. Lake level monitoring on Dave Hanson's dock setup by Barr on May 9
  8. Lake level monitoring between Twin and Sweeney setup by Barr on May 12
  9. Bi-weekly in-lake sampling, continuous inflow monitoring and base flow water quality samples collected
  10. Dave Hanson is continuing to send us his CAMP data
  11. The oxygen level at the bottom of the lake is already very low - similar to what we saw last year

Work in the Next 2-4 Weeks

  1. Continue in-lake data collection - biweekly
  2. Continue to review in-lake and sample data as it is available and work with Dave Hanson on his additional data collection efforts
  3. Continue Lake response model setup - BATHTUB model
  4. Project webpage updates as information is available
