SEH is working with LEA to assist with biomass procurement after evaluating a variety of feedstocks and providing reviews of existing facilities for the Hibbing Public Utility and Virginia Public Utility. Each utility operates a municipal district energy cogeneration plants with a combined 66 megawatts of electrical generating capacity. The two utilities created an energy authority to re-power coal-fired district heating boilers in Hibbing and Virginia that produce steam and electricity. Their joint venture, the Laurentian Energy Authority (LEA), will use boilers fueled from biomass instead of coal to produce steam and electricity.
