The MARQ2 Transitway project transformed two downtown Minneapolis streets (Marquette and 2nd Avenues) by using a whole-systems approach to the transitway design process. Once met with slow moving buses, narrow sidewalks, and sparse vegetation, downtown commuters are now greeted with improved transit flow, wider sidewalks, and enhanced streetscape and transit amenities. The project utilized the “Silva Cell” subsurface structural cell system to collect, treat, and recycle stormwater runoff while providing loose, fertile soil to support healthy street trees. The MARQ2  project demonstrates the successful collaboration between the landscape architects and project engineers  in the planning, design, and construction of robust, self-sustaining solutions for a new model of downtown streetscape.
