Water supply improvements prevent introduction of Whirling Disease into Colorado waters. As an engineering subconsultant, SEH designed cost-effective, water supply improvements for five, coldwater Colorado fish hatcheries. These improvements allowed the Colorado Division of Wildlife to meet its objective of producing fish free of Whirling Disease. Existing conditions at these sites allowed the Whirling Disease spores to easily enter the hatcheries’ water supply, and therefore contaminate the fish. SEH designed systems and piping for each hatchery to collect the spring water prior to surfacing using an underground collection system that avoided contamination from open creeks. From the collection system, the water was then piped directly into the hatchery.

Features

  • Designed systems to collect the spring water prior to surfacing using an underground collection system
  • Initiated the project by completing topographic surveys for each site
  • Field delineation and mapping of the existing wetlands
