A significant quarry operation in the City of Burnsville requires continuous dewatering of natural groundwater to allow mining of dolomite deposits. The natural groundwater is currently discharged to the Minnesota River. Based on the potential regional benefits, the State of Minnesota appropriated $5.5 million towards a $13 million surface water treatment plant. The existing Burnsville Water Treatment Plant will be expanded with a surface water treatment process designed in accordance with the EPA Surface Water Treatment Rule. The plant is designed to treat up to six million gallons of quarry water per day for the cities of Burnsville and neighboring Savage. Raw water pump stations and a transmission main will be constructed at the quarry to pump water approximately one mile to the surface water treatment plant. The process design includes rapid mixing, flocculation, filtration, and a 500,000 gallon chlorine contact basin with baffles to meet mandatory disinfection requirements. A new backwash reclaim system will recycle at least 90 percent of the backwash wastewater.
