The City of Brookfield Water Utility was under a consent order by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to implement radium removal treatment from City Wells 15 and 16. Brookfield retained SEH to design a radium removal water treatment plant for the Brookfield Square supply wells using radium selective resins. The Brookfield treatment plant was the first of its kind in Wisconsin to use this water treatment technology.
Working within a confined space and under strict time constraints, SEH designed a 650 square foot, three-story building that houses state-of-the-art treatment media for removing radium from the City’s drinking water. The City required that the structure visually blend with surrounding commercial and retail buildings, and include a removable roof to facilitate future equipment upgrades and maintenance.
The project went from conceptual design to plant start up in less than 10 months. Teamwork and responsiveness from the City and other public agencies resulted in completing construction of the facility in less than 90 days. The fast-track project was successfully completed one day before the EPA regulatory deadline.
The Brookfield Square Water Treatment Facility is a compact, innovative, and aesthetically pleasing solution that meets new EPA radium standards for municipal water supplies in Wisconsin.
