Award: American Public Works Association’s 1996 Public Works Project of the Year, Environmental Category
SEH developed an award-winning design for flood control improvements that led to approximately 100 at-risk homes and businesses being removed from the 100-year floodplain. The challenge included designing flood control improvements from the confluence with Cherry Creek to Dartmouth Avenue with a project area reach of 12,000 feet. Because of the significant construction impacts on the surrounding community, an extensive public involvement process was included in this project to give the stakeholders a better understanding of the flood control benefits. The SEH solution involved wetland mitigation, channelization, erosion control, flood control storage, and additional flood flow capacity. The end results were exceptionally functional and aesthetically pleasing. This project was completed on time and within budget.
