Homeland Security and Emergency Management Hazard Mitigation Planning

Natural disasters occur in hundreds of communities every year. The devastating impacts cause millions of dollars in damage and threaten lives and safety. Unfortunately, because many of these hazards cannot be prevented, it is only a matter of time until some form of disaster is encountered. Communities and organizations, however, can take steps to prepare for, and reduce the impacts of, such events. Taking action prior to an event to reduce or eliminate loss is called hazard mitigation; the benefits of which have been demonstrated in countless ways across the country.

To be ready for future challenges, communities and organizations should conduct a thorough analysis of the hazards and vulnerabilities that they face. At a minimum, they should consider natural hazards (geological, meteorological and biological) and manmade events (accidental and intentional).

SEH provides essential hazard mitigation planning services to help identify hazards, assess vulnerabilities and recommend mitigation strategies. Mitigation plans must meet today’s standards and guidelines such as those related to the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1600. SEH professionals are experienced in hazard mitigation planning strategies, and are prepared to help strengthen your mitigation planning efforts.
