Inflow and Infiltration (I/I)

I/I is one of the primary causes of sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) in which untreated sewage is released from a collection system before it can reach a treatment facility. Introducing clear water into a wastewater collection system, whether directly (inflow) or indirectly (infiltration), can result in negative environmental impacts, compliance issues, higher treatment costs, basement backups and excess wear and tear on the system.

In the late 1990s, the Environmental Protection Agency began evaluating ways to control SSOs. The result is pending legislation that may require communities to submit documentation on how they will avoid SSOs in the future. Part of this documentation addresses the capacity assurance, management, operation and maintenance (CMOM) requirements for the wastewater collection system.
