Job Diversity Keeps This ‘Young Engineer of the Year’ on Top of His Game

April 5, 2017

From suit and tie to boots and hard hat — he embraces both on the way to Young Engineer of the Year.

Scott LaVoy, SEH civil engineer, was selected as the 2016 South Dakota Engineering Society (SDES) Eastern Chapter "Young Engineer of the Year" at the 2016 SDES Awards Banquet.

This award is established to recognize young SDES members who have made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession and their communities during the early years of their careers. Selected winners from each chapter go on to compete at the state level.

Scott Lavoy, SEH civil engineer, was presented with the 2016 Young Engineer of the Year award from the South Dakota Engineering Society (SDES) Eastern Chapter.

“When I was in school, I really enjoyed learning about physics and math and I wanted to do something that would involve putting the principals of those subjects to work,” says Scott. “So engineering seemed like a good fit for me.”

But it’s the variety of work that keeps him engaged every day.

He loves the fact that one day he can be dressed in a suit and tie giving a presentation to members of the legislature, and the next he can be wearing works boots and a hard hat working on a sewer with construction workers.

“The variety of different things we work on and people we meet throughout the course of a project keeps things interesting,” he says.

To Scott, winning the award is recognition for work that often gets overlooked.

“Civil engineers work really hard, but much of what we do is invisible to the public,” Scott says. “So having an opportunity like this to be recognized for the hard work and long hours is pretty special!"
