St. Joseph Fire Station #10

Challenge

For more than 100 years, Station #10 has served the community of St. Joseph, Missouri, supporting generations of firefighters and the residents who rely on them in emergencies. While the station carried deep historic significance, the facility itself no longer met the demands of modern emergency response.

As equipment evolved and service expectations increased, the aging building presented growing operational challenges. Limited space, outdated layouts, and constrained circulation affected daily workflows and made it harder for crews to move efficiently from dispatch to deployment. The facility also lacked the infrastructure needed to support firefighter health, safety, and recovery following emergency calls.

The city and its fire department recognized the need for a station that could better support today’s response demands and future growth while preserving the legacy of a community cornerstone that has served generations of residents. 

Solution

The St. Joseph Fire Department partnered with SEH to design a modern, efficient fire station that strengthens emergency response while honoring the history of Station #10, which dates back to the early 1900s. The approximately 14,000-square-foot facility is currently in the design phase and will replace the existing station, with operations anticipated by the end of 2026.

Every aspect of the layout is designed to support faster dispatch, efficient movement, and team readiness.

Designing for Faster, More Efficient Response

The new station is designed to improve operational efficiency from the moment a call comes in. Three drive-through apparatus bays allow emergency vehicles to move quickly in and out of the station without complex maneuvering, helping reduce response times and improve daily workflow for crews. Supporting spaces such as bunker gear storage, laundry, and decontamination areas are strategically located to streamline operations and help limit firefighters’ exposure to contaminants after responding to emergencies.

Supporting Firefighter Health and Readiness

Outside of active calls, the station is designed to support firefighters’ daily needs and well-being. Dedicated dorm rooms, a day room, a kitchen, and an exercise space create a comfortable and functional environment where crews can rest, train, and stay physically prepared between calls. Administrative areas provide space for coordination, training, and station operations, helping ensure crews are ready to serve the community.

Honoring a Legacy While Looking Forward

While the new station will deliver modern functionality, the design also reflects the history of the St. Joseph Fire Department. Murals and architectural elements inspired by historic fire stations and early horse-drawn fire engines will be incorporated into the building, celebrating the department’s legacy while connecting it to a new generation of service.

When complete, Station #10 will bridge St. Joseph’s firefighting heritage with its future. The facility will provide firefighters and supporting crews with the space, tools, and environment needed to respond quickly, operate safely, and continue serving the community for decades to come. More than a replacement building, it represents an investment in the people who protect their community every day.
