2026 2nd Ave South Improvements

Project Overview

This is a complete street and utility reconstruction project led by the City of Sauk Rapids. Construction is expected to begin by June 2026. The project scope includes replacement and upgrades to the existing street and sidewalks, sanitary sewer, water main, services in the streets, and storm sewer system. It also includes the construction of the new mini-roundabout at the intersection of 2nd Avenue South and 14th Street South. It is also planned to extend sidewalks on 12th and 14th Street South between 2nd and Broadway Avenue South, along 14th Street South between 2nd and 3rd Avenue South, and along 9th Street South from the alley east of 2nd Avenue South to the Benton Drive/ Summit Avenue intersection.

Additional details will be provided related to construction activity and next steps for the project once the City has a construction Contractor hired. The project has been bid, but has not been awarded.

Status of Private Utility Work

City project work (streets and municipal utilities) is expected to begin by June 2026. In preparation for the City’s street and public utility work, relocation and upgrade work for small (private) utilities (natural gas, electric, communications) began last Fall 2025 by Xcel Energy natural gas crews and has resumed this Winter/Spring 2026 by Xcel Energy electric crews, with several weeks of work by all utility companies remaining – weather dependent.

Remaining Xcel Energy natural gas work is primarily along both sides of 2nd Avenue South from 10th Street South to Searle Street NE, as well as along 13th St So west of 2nd Avenue South. Xcel’s electric crews are working on relocating and undergrounding overhead lines and services off of the 2nd Avenue South corridor. Charter Spectrum crews will be removing and relocating their overhead facilities from the Xcel poles being removed in the 2nd Avenue South corridor.  Lumen crews will be completing miscellaneous relocations and adjustments to their underground facilities within the City’s project area.

Relocation of private utilities is necessary to avoid construction conflicts with the proposed street and public utility construction. There is considerable private utility work planned in conjunction with the City’s project in and around the immediate project area. This work will continue prior to and during roadway and public utility construction. Any service interruptions will be communicated by each utility.
