Buffalo Fire Station Design

Challenge

For more than 60 years, the fire station serving the City of Buffalo, Minnesota, operated without any significant updates. As the City expanded and emergency response demands increased, the facility struggled to keep pace. The aging station lacked the space, technology, and design features needed to support modern firefighting operations. Limited capacity for apparatus, insufficient room for training and decontamination, and outdated living quarters posed challenges to both efficiency and firefighter well-being. Ensuring continued reliable, high-quality service to the community required a new fire station designed for safety, performance, and long-term growth.

Solution

SEH worked closely with the City to design a new fire station that responds directly to the needs of the department and the broader community. The result is a modern, 30,000 sq. ft., three-story facility designed with purpose and built to last.

Operational Efficiency and Future Readiness

The $6.5 million facility includes six drive-through apparatus bays, providing ample space for the current fleet and allowing for future equipment expansion. Key support features such as a decontamination room, laundry and work areas, and a hose drying tower were thoughtfully integrated to streamline operations and improve safety protocols. Together, these features help ensure firefighters can clean, reset, and return to duty quickly and safely after each call.

Spaces That Support First Responders

Every aspect of the station was thoughtfully designed to support the physical health, mental well-being, and daily performance of firefighters. Amenities such as a fitness room, dayroom, and dormitory spaces offer opportunities for rest and recovery between calls. A clean turn-out gear room minimizes exposure to contaminants, while the spacious training room and radio room enhance coordination and preparedness. Administrative offices provide space for leadership and departmental functions, ensuring smooth daily operations.

Built to Grow with the Community

The station’s layout and systems were intentionally designed with flexibility in mind. As the City continues to grow, the facility can accommodate new staff, updated equipment, and evolving operational needs. This future-focused design ensures the investment will serve the community well for decades to come.

By replacing an outdated facility with a high-performing, adaptable station, the City of Buffalo strengthened its emergency response capabilities and reaffirmed its commitment to first responder safety and community service.
