Elevated highway above wetlands

Carver County Southwest Reconnection

Challenge

Seasonal flooding was closing two integral highways, forcing traffic onto other routes and creating congestion. This caused frustration and cost 20,000 daily travelers significant time and money.

Solution

Highway 101 was widened and raised above the highest recorded flood level, and County Highway 61 was reconstructed. Two roundabouts were added to correct poor alignment and increase safety. A nearby creek was realigned.
