Challenge
Cypress Rail Solutions was pursuing the purchase of an existing rail facility in Vermillion, South Dakota, and were working toward a strategic expansion of their railcar maintenance operations. The acquisition was intended to support long-term operational needs and provide a ready-to-use location for servicing railcars. Late in the transaction process, however, a section of track was identified that did not meet current geometric standards. An existing curve was too tight, and approval would not be granted until the issue was corrected. Without a compliant design and constructed solution, the property purchase could not move forward, putting a critical business investment at risk.
The client’s ability to move forward with the purchase directly affected their operational plans and future growth. The goal was to remove the obstacle quickly while delivering a solution the railroad could confidently approve, and the client could implement without disrupting their timeline.

Solution
SEH partnered with Northern Plains Rail Service (NPR) to conduct an analysis and successfully correct a crucial issue with the railway's track curve. From the outset, the team understood that this project was more than correcting track geometry – it was about making targeted improvements that kept the client’s operations running smoothly while supporting a stronger, safer rail facility for the community.
SEH reacted quickly to NPR’s request by responding and mobilizing within four days, even over the Labor Day weekend. To continue our accelerated progress, the team captured existing conditions using a drone-based survey. This approach enabled data to be collected quickly and with high accuracy, providing immediate insight into the track alignment and surrounding constraints. With reliable information available early, the team was able to analyze the issue, evaluate options, and move directly into design without delay.
Targeted Alignment Correction
The analysis showed that compliance could be achieved through a focused adjustment rather than a complete reconstruction. By laterally shifting the track approximately two and a half feet at the midpoint of the curve, the geometry was brought into alignment with railroad standards while minimizing impacts to adjacent infrastructure. The refined solution reduced construction effort, controlled costs, and preserved the functionality of the facility the client intended to operate.
Collaborative Railroad Review and Approval
Throughout the process, the team coordinated closely with railroad reviewers. Early engagement and familiarity with railroad standards and approval expectations allowed the design to be reviewed efficiently and refined as needed. This collaborative approach helped maintain momentum and avoid extended review cycles that could have delayed the transaction.
Accelerated Construction and Transaction Support
Once approved, the project moved seamlessly into construction. The contractor mobilized quickly and completed the work within a tight seasonal window. The accelerated delivery resolved the railroad’s concerns, allowed the property purchase to close, and enabled the client to proceed with their planned railcar maintenance operations without further interruption.
Delivered for Northern Plains Rail Service on behalf of Cypress Rail Solutions, the project demonstrates how aligning technical expertise with a clear understanding of client goals can support time-sensitive decisions. By focusing on the why behind the project and the realities of railroad approval, the team helped turn a late-stage challenge into a successful outcome that supports ongoing rail operations and economic activity.
