STH 73 Jughandle Interchange

Challenge

There was a high rate of crashes along the State Highway 73 and US 12/18 corridor, and access for alternative methods of transportation had to be improved. Beyond designing a safer multimodal alternative, the project team would need to shepherd the project through sensitive environmental and cultural resources. Finally, with high volumes of traffic, they would need to phase the project accordingly.

Solution

As part of a larger team, Dane Partners, SEH transportation planners and engineers helped design a unique jughandle interchange design and corridor reconstruction project. The project was developed through an environmentally sensitive corridor and was completed under an accelerated design schedule of just 24 months. The team also met requirements to mitigate an NRCS Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) easement, and kept traffic flowing during construction with five different stages.
